artificial grass Installation in Dubai: Step-by-Step Process

A behind-the-scenes look at how professional landscape contractors engineer a permanent, zero-sinking synthetic lawn.

The Truth About Artificial Grass Installation in Dubai

Many homeowners assume that installing synthetic turf is as simple as buying a green roll of carpet, cutting it to size, and laying it flat on the sand. This is the fastest route to a ruined garden. Artificial grass installation is a heavy civil engineering project on a micro-scale. If the foundation is flawed, the entire lawn will sink, tear, flood, and breed mold.

At EagleTurf, we have performed hundreds of flawless installations from luxury villas in Jumeirah to massive commercial complexes in Business Bay. In this guide, we break down our proprietary step-by-step artificial grass installation Dubai process and reveal what goes into the cost of professional landscaping.

Step 1: Heavy Excavation and Ground Clearing

Before any new material is introduced, the old environment must be entirely eradicated. In a typical Dubai backyard (for example, a townhouse in Dubai Marina or Arabian Ranches), the existing ground is either loose, shifting desert sand, or dead, patchy natural grass full of weeds and roots.

Our teams excavate the entire area to a depth of 7 to 10 centimeters. We meticulously remove all organic matter, dead roots, rocks, and old irrigation pipes. If organic matter is left beneath the new turf, it will decay over time, causing massive sinkholes to appear across your pristine lawn.

Step 2: Installing the Weed Barrier Membrane

Once the ground is excavated and leveled, we roll out a commercial-grade, permeable geotextile weed membrane. This serves two critical functions:

  1. It prevents any dormant seeds or tough UAE desert weeds from sprouting and pushing their way up through the drainage holes of the artificial grass.
  2. It acts as a stabilization layer, preventing the heavy aggregate sub-base from mixing with the soft desert sand beneath it over time.

Step 3: Engineering the Sub-Base (The Most Important Step)

This is where amateur "gardeners" fail. You cannot lay artificial grass directly on sand. We import tons of mixed aggregate (crushed rock, gravel, and limestone dust, commonly known as Type 1 MOT or road base). This aggregate is spread evenly across the weed membrane to a depth of roughly 5 to 8 centimeters.

Our fitters then use heavy mechanical vibrating plate compactors to brutally compress the stone until it is as hard as concrete. The aggregate locks together, creating a perfectly smooth, slightly crowned surface that allows for rapid water runoff while ensuring the ground will never sink under the weight of foot traffic or heavy garden furniture.

Step 4: Screeding and Laser Leveling

Atop the compacted aggregate base, we apply a thin layer of fine granite dust or sharp sand. This "screed" layer is hand-leveled using laser guides and screeding bars to iron out any microscopic bumps or dips. The result is a glass-smooth surface that perfectly mirrors the desired topography of your garden.

Step 5: Rolling, Cutting, and Fitting the Turf

With the permanent base engineered, the actual artificial grass installation begins. The massive, heavy rolls of premium synthetic turf are manhandled exactly into position. The turf must be laid out so that the "pile direction" (the microscopic lean of the grass blades) faces the main viewing angle of the house. If multiple rolls are used, the pile direction must perfectly align, otherwise, the lawn will look like a checkerboard.

Using specialized curved utility knifes, our fitters meticulously cut the turf around garden borders, planter boxes, trees, and curved swimming pools.

Step 6: Invisible Seaming

Unless your garden is very narrow, multiple rolls of grass will need to be joined. This is the true test of a master fitter. We peel back the edges of the adjoining turf rolls and lay down a heavy-duty fiberglass seaming tape directly on the sub-base. We then apply specialized, weather-proof polyurethane turf adhesive across the tape.

The edges are carefully brought together like a zipper, ensuring no grass blades are trapped in the glue. When done correctly, the seam is 100% invisible to the naked eye.

Step 7: Silica Sand Infill and Power Brushing

The final step is arguably what separates a good lawn from a spectacular one. We use a drop-spreader to evenly distribute kiln-dried, washed silica sand across the entire surface of the grass. We never use toxic crumb rubber.

The silica sand falls absolutely out of sight to the bottom of the turf backing. It acts as essential ballast, weighing the grass down so it never wrinkles or shifts in the wind. More importantly, the sand supports the base of the grass yarns, forcing them to stand vertically upright, providing that hyper-realistic, freshly mowed aesthetic.

Finally, we run a heavy mechanical power-brush over the entire area. This pulls trapped grass blades up, works the sand deep into the pile, and leaves the lawn looking flawless.

FAQ: Installation Process

1. How long does the installation take?

For an average villa garden in Dubai (between 50 and 80 square meters), our massive teams can usually complete the entire excavation, base building, and turf installation in 1 to 2 days.

2. Can you install artificial grass over concrete or tiles?

Absolutely. If the concrete is in good condition and has adequate drainage gradients, we do not need to excavate. Instead, we install a specialized foam shock-pad over the concrete, and glue the artificial grass directly to the shock-pad. This is very popular for balconies and rooftops.

3. Why does my neighbor's artificial grass have puddles when it rains?

Because they hired an amateur. The puddles mean the contractor did not build a permeable sub-base or they laid the grass directly on uneven sand. Proper installation guarantees 100% drainage.

4. Does the installation damage existing trees or hardscaping?

No. We cut the turf precisely around existing trees, leaving a smart soil ring for watering. We meticulously protect all expensive paving and walls during the base compaction process.
