If you own a large dog in the UAE, you already know the struggle. Keeping natural grass alive in extreme heat is hard enough, but when you add an active dog to the mix, it becomes impossible. Dogs dig holes, tear up roots, and worst of all, their urine contains high levels of nitrogen that instantly burns real grass, leaving massive yellow craters across your lawn.
Switching to artificial turf is the only logical solution. However, you cannot just buy any random piece of green plastic. A specialized synthetic grass installation is strictly required to ensure the garden remains hygienic, odor-free, and safe for your furry family members.
This is the single most important factor when choosing turf for dogs. Regular artificial grass uses a latex or standard PU backing with drainage holes punched every 10 centimeters. While this is acceptable for rain, it is terrible for dog urine because the urine can pool on the backing between the holes.
Specialized pet turf features a "max-flow" or completely permeable backing. It allows hundreds of liters of liquid to drain straight through every square meter instantly. There is no pooling, meaning urine is instantly flushed down into the sub-base beneath.
While a thick, 40mm long pile looks incredibly luxurious, it is a nightmare for pet owners. Long grass fibers make it very difficult to scoop solid dog waste without pushing it deeper into the grass.
For dogs, we strongly recommend a 20mm to 30mm pile height. It provides ample softness for their paws but is short enough that solid waste sits on top of the pile, making daily cleanup fast and fully hygienic.
Dogs love to run, wrestle, and dig. If your grass has low stitch density or uses cheap, flat yarn blades, your dog will flatten the grass within a week. High-density grass woven with C-shaped or ribbed yarns features a mechanical "memory," springing back upright even after heavy dog play.
Choosing the right grass is only 50% of the solution. The other 50% relies entirely on the sub-surface engineering. A standard synthetic grass installation for a normal garden is not enough for a multi-dog household in Arabian Ranches or The Villa.
A common fear among homeowners is whether the plastic grass contains toxic chemicals or lead. If you buy cheap grass from unregulated overseas markets, this is a valid concern.
However, premium European turf imported by professional landscaping firms is vigorously tested. It is 100% lead-free, non-toxic, and totally safe even if your dog decides to chew on a loose blade. More importantly, because the grass is synthetic, you completely eliminate the need to spray toxic chemical pesticides and herbicides on your garden to keep bugs away.
In the direct peak afternoon summer sun, yes, it gets hot. We recommend ensuring your garden has a shaded area (like a pergola or sail shade) for your dogs during summer afternoons, or giving the grass a quick spray with a hose to instantly drop the surface temperature.
2. How do I clean dog urine from the grass? While the Zeolite infill traps the odor, you should still hose down your dog's "favorite spots" once a week. Once a month, spray a heavy dilution of water and white vinegar, or a commercial enzymatic turf cleaner, to completely sanitize the area.
3. Can dogs dig through it?Dogs may try to dig, but premium PU-backed grass is incredibly tough. It is highly unlikely a dog can claw through the heavy polyurethane backing. The main risk is them pulling up the unpinned edges, which is why professional installers deeply secure the perimeter of the lawn.
